The Scariest Things on The Internet

By Chris Vendilli 4 Minute Read

Halloween will soon be upon us in the upcoming week. After putting together numerous social media schedules for our clients, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ran into articles talking about the “10 Best Costumes For This Year” or “50 Pumpkins Carved Into The Shape Of (Insert Video Game Character Here)”.

Sure, these are interesting topics and all, but they tend to weigh heavily on the more “cute and comfortable” side of the holiday. However, I wanted to write today’s post with a little different aspect of Halloween in mind.

For me, the fun part of Halloween is pushing myself out of my comfort zone a little bit. This means going to places or reading things that actually scare me (which is surprisingly easy). Halloween gives us an excuse to go find things that give us that slight adrenaline rush. You know that feeling right before you get on an intimidating roller coaster? Sure, you know everything is going to be OK but you can't quite shake that nervous feeling of anticipation the entire time you're in line.

That’s why this year, I decided to go out and find the scariest pages the Internet has to offer. These sites do a great job of provoking uneasiness in their viewers by using disturbing images, toying with the readers imagination or a combination of both. I hope you have as much fun reading this as I did writing it.

TakeThisLollipop

I was a bit skeptical about what this even was when I first read the title. After playing through it, I was pleasantly surprised at how eerie the video was. You’ll need to give the program permission to use your Facebook information before you can start the video. The real haunting concept of this video: the idea of what random strangers could do with the information you have online.

The Forbidden Files: The Soldier

I think some of the things that creep me out the most are scary stories or movies that are filmed documentary style. They have a way of making the story seem more believable by making me think I was actually there. This is a real piece of footage taken from a soldier on a Sicily beach in 1943. While messing around with his camera, the soldier encounters two strange figures that walk onto the beach. The solider's curiosity with these figures ends up having dire consequences.

“Creepy Korean Comic”

creepy korean comic

This is a Korean comic that has made quite a splash around the Internet for a few years. The article depicts a young girl following a stranger in an isolated area late at night. Confused by the strangers odd mannerisms and appearance she inquires to as to what’s wrong. The response she gets is a frightening one. This strip seems to have a chilling effect on most readers.

NOTE: You do not need to speak Korean when you get to this page - just SCROLL DOWN!

Creepypasta

If you enjoy a good scare on the Internet but haven’t heard of Creepypasta yet, you’re in for a real treat. Creepypasta is basically a collection of horror stories and urban legends that have circulated around the Internet. They are usually short stories that have been passed from online forum to online forum. This page is perhaps one of the most comprehensive collections of Creepypasta around. I posted a link to the suggested reading page for starters, but you could spend hours on this site alone.

Scary Wikipedia Articles

I LOVE reading scary Wikipedia articles. A lot of these articles contain information about real people, places, and urban legends with disturbing backgrounds. The fun part for me is that these things seem so much more realistic than something I would see in the theater. My personal favorites are the legend of the "Bunny Man" and the "Dyatlov Pass Incident".

The House

A house with a creepy back-story? Check.

Poorly lit visuals? Check.

Repetitive heart pounding background music? Check.

Unexplained noises and inconsistent events? Check.

This flash game takes you through a house that hasn't been entered since 1970 when a family inexplicably all committed suicide. As you move up through the levels, the game gradually gets more heart pounding. It's definitely one of those things that's best played by yourself in the dark.

MarbleHornets

One of the only horror movies that I ever found truly scary was the Blair Witch Project. Like I said, documentary horror movies have a certain way of freaking me out because they feel much more based in reality.

This is a collection of videos that tell the story of “Slender Man” that has become an Internet sensation. The story is told from a found footage viewpoint from a film school friend of a character named “Alex”. As he reconstructs Alex’s story by analyzing the film, he begins to find the dark secret that Alex was trying to hide from the world.

The Dionaea House

Creepy email correspondence about a house where people keep disappearing. The author eventually gets a little too intrigued.

Ted The Caver

Ted the Caver is a story about two cavers that explore an unknown (you guessed it) cave. The further they embark in the cave, the more haunting things they begin to experience. This story does a great job of playing with the reader’s fear of the unknown and really allowing your imagination to run away with you. Make sure you have some time on your hands if you’re going to read the story. It took me over an hour. The second scariest thing about this page: The AngelFire web design.
