The Power of Design

By Danielle Matthews 3 Minute Read

You’ve heard it all before, right?  “There’s no time like the present!”

As a marketing agency, we understand urgency better than anyone.  Part of our job is to make sure we are best advising our partners on when to get the word out and how.  We see how quickly things come and go, how often, what works, and why.  I’ve come to learn in life that no matter what it is, when you think too much about it, it will never be the right time for anything —be it buying a house, starting a family, changing your career, or, yes, even investing in your marketing.  It will never be the perfect time, so it may as well be now or never.

2021 Projects

For what I do, things change quickly.  Artists are known to be trendsetters, mold-breakers, and non-conformists.  Once something catches fire, there’s always a group of creative people trying to figure out what they can do next to be different or do something new.

There’s a few projects we did in 2021 that I would love to share with you as a reason as to why you shouldn’t wait to invest in your marketing—why now will never be a better time.

  1. Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop
Grandpa Joe’s was a lot of fun to work on.  Their vibe was full of energy, life, and creativity from the start, which made taking on this project a joy.  It’s as close as you will get to the real life Willy Wonka, and how does that not make you happy?

The Grandpa Joe’s team really made the sky the limit.  Their style was fun and quirky, with very few “do nots” on their wishlist….if any at all.  The challenge to solve was to make a website that encompassed the look and feel of their unique looking stores, as well as really pack a punch with making this website do a few things that other websites typically shy away from.  It was our chance to incorporate funky font choices, goofy images, and fun, silly things into a website.  Playing off of their bold brand colors and unique style, we paired up retro looking fonts and patterns to help tell the story of what it is like to shop at Grandpa Joe’s Candy shop. We wanted you to feel that same sense of nostalgia that you get when you walk into one of their stores.

Additionally, we were tasked to carry this into an e-commerce experience with this new look and feel, and make some suggestions for a phased approach in how to re-organize and categorize their products to make it easier for users to find what they were looking for.

The end result was fun, branded, quirky, and nostalgic—uniquely Grandpa Joe’s and something no other candy shop around has.

  2. Vendilli Digital Group
Is it biased to include your own website?  I’m doing it anyway. It’s no secret that for agencies, internal work tends to be deprioritized.  Launching vendilli.com and our new brand was a big thing that needed to happen.  Luckily, while many folks were enjoying their summer vacations, time presented itself to focus on the new Vendilli website design.  Albeit, in true fashion, it was way overdue and needed to be launched “yesterday”.  I won’t lie— we launched with some things missing, buggy, or that were still on our “wishlist”, so it’s without reservation that I’m proud to say we finally took our own advice and stuck to a launchpad style approach.

What I liked best about working on the Vendilli site — besides the beautiful, real, raw launchpad approach — was how bright and bold our branding was to make it shine. It was fun pulling in large blocks of color and flowing shapes to create a mood, as well as effectively using white space to our advantage .   On top of that, we were inspired by a lot of the big agency players in our space on how to better showcase our portfolio, which was previously lacking a thoughtful, curated presentation.  Big images and color were key to the website as a focal point all around.  We wanted to be visual storytellers, and craft meaningful content that supported the images nicely to complete that narrative. It’s not perfect—it’s a true work in progress in all areas that I’m excited to keep improving upon.
